It’s Not Too Late to Start Your Garden.

This time last year I was barely planting my summer garden. While I still enjoyed a great harvest, I could have been enjoying it much earlier. This year, I started my summer crops as early as the beginning of March, I got a huge head start on my warm season crops and we are reaping the benefits in Spring. My most proliferous crops right now are summer squash and peppers. Our Celebrity tomato plant produced for us over the last few weeks, getting us an early tomato harvest too. The rest of our tomatoes are so close we can taste it!

tomatoes grow on a trellis against a fence while basil grows on each side of a cream planter. Strawberry colored marigolds grow in front with green onions.

That being said, It’s still not too late to start your summer garden in the inland valleys. We have a long warm growing season and should be hitting even hotter temps in a month’s time.

The best time to transplant your plants is either in the evening so they can rest over night or early in the morning. Additionally, some of your seedlings may benefit from 20% to 40% shade cloth so they can get acclimated to the heat.

Right now is still a great time to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, summer and winter squash to get a full summer harvest.
