Staghorn Fern

Lighting Needs: Staghorn ferns (Platycerium spp.) thrive in bright, filtered light but should be protected from direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

Humidity: Maintain a humid environment, ideally around 60-80% humidity. Regular misting or placing the plant on a tray with pebbles and water can help increase humidity.

Watering: Water the fern by thoroughly soaking its roots and the base of the plant, allowing excess water to drain away. Let the top inch of the mounting material (usually a mix of sphagnum moss and other materials) dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid water accumulation in the center "nest" of the plant.

Mounting: Staghorn ferns are often mounted on wooden boards or hung in baskets. They can also be potted in a well-draining medium such as orchid bark.

Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 60-80°F (15-27°C). Protect the fern from extreme cold or sudden temperature drops.

Fertilization: Feed the fern with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

Pruning: Trim off any dead or browning fronds to encourage new growth and maintain the plant's appearance.

Repotting: Repot only when necessary, as staghorn ferns prefer to be slightly root-bound. Gently remove the plant from its mounting, trim any overcrowded roots, and remount it or place it in a larger pot if needed.

Pests: Keep an eye out for pests like scale or mealybugs, especially in the nooks and crannies of the fronds. Remove them manually or use insecticidal soap if necessary.

Air Circulation: Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent stagnant moisture and fungal issues. Hanging the fern or placing it in a well-ventilated area can help.
